Ogiek Peoples' Development Program(OPDP) will be holding ‘Ogiek Celebration Day’ on May 26,2018 at Nessuit Primary School,  in Njoro sub-county, Nakuru County; Kenya.

It will be a day of celebrating one year after a landmark win for Ogiek in a human rights case filed against the government of Kenya at the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights based in Arusha, Tanzania.

The community had sued the government for violating their rights to life, property, culture, natural resources, development and religion enshrined in Articles 1, 2, 4, 8, 14, 17(2) and (3), 21 and 22 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

The Court ruled that the Kenyan government had violated all rights the community had fleshed out except the right to life(Article 4) when it forcefully ejected its members from the Mau Forest Complex.

The Court’s decision was a huge victory not just for the Ogiek but also for the indigenous communities in Africa and across the world. It is therefore critical to celebrate the victory.
